NeuroFeedback for NeuroDivergence
Supporting families navigating unique neurodivergence profiles, sensory processing and communication pathways.
Over more than two decades working in the field of mental health, I have spent a lot of time with children and individuals who experience the world through a deeply unique, neurodivergent lens. I understand that children with neurodivergent profiles often come with highly sensitive and easily saturated nervous systems that experience daily life with intense vulnerability.
When a child’s sensory processing system feels constantly overwhelmed by their environment, it can lead to chronic nervous system over-activation. This can show up as intense sensory sensitivities, communication barriers, difficulty transitioning between tasks, and impulsive or reactive behaviours. Traditional verbal approaches can sometimes add to this overwhelm, which is why the gentle, non-verbal approach of neurofeedback can be very helpful.
Believe it or not, for a very young child or a child who will find it difficult to tolerate sensors on their heads and ears while awake, I have found the most successful way of giving them neurofeedback is to hire a professional system so that you may apply the paste and sensors and run the 33-minute session when they are asleep. My years of experience has taught me this is an exceptionally peaceful way to facilitate training, without causing added stress to the neurodivergent child, since neurofeedback works with electrical frequencies in the exact same way whether one is awake or asleep.
Understanding expectations & personal milestones:
It is important to recognise that neurofeedback does not function as a medical cure, and it does not alter an individual's natural neurodivergent identity. Instead, it serves as a gentle, non-invasive wellness tool designed to support the central nervous system in finding a calmer, more flexible equilibrium.
Because every brain is entirely unique, progress looks different for every single individual. Neurofeedback training for neurodivergent children is best approached as a gradual, longer-term process of strengthening brain fitness. Rather than unrealistic shifts, the families I work with focus on celebrating meaningful and gradual small shifts. Depending on the child's starting baseline, these highly valued personal shifts can include:
Sensory Processing Support: a gentle softening of intense environmental overload, helping children settle their bodies and experience a deeper state of relaxation.
Communication Pathways: supporting greater cognitive efficiency, which can assist semi-verbal or non-verbal children in making gradual progress with verbal expression — whether that shows up as clearer communication, new words here and there, or a greater willingness to play co-operatively and interact with others.
Behavioural Adaptability: helping the brain step out of rigid, automatic stress loops, which frequently supports a reduction in daily tension, calms reactive moments and allows for smoother transitions between tasks.
